Interactive Newsprint concepts revealed
After months of distilling information gathered through our first community co-design workshops in November, members of the Interactive Newsprint team gathered in Preston this week to present a ‘concepts’ book to a smaller group of residents, groups and representatives.
Jam-packed with interactive print ideas inspired by the first round of community consultation, the concepts book – collated by the University of Dundee after input from all the research team – sought to prompt debate around the potential designs they showcase. The session also began to assess whether the designs under consideration would be viable once rolled out across Preston.
Community reporters, youth groups, residents and members of Preston FM radio station came together to tell us what they liked, disliked and to help us to assess whether or not it would be possible to populate these paper platforms with content.
Examples included a personal paper podcast from the mayor or local music producer, a standard news sheet but with a headphone jack to allow users to access audio content on the move and interactive paper audio guides that would guide users around local attractions or even cemeteries.
But there were many more, with over 30 paper options contained within the concepts book, and more generated over the course of the workshop.
After a couple of hours of intensely productive (and enjoyable) deliberating, chatting, drawing, sketching and writing responses – and some time coming up with brand new concepts, the Interactive Newsprint team will now concentrate on a number of key designs that we’ll prototype and present back to the community in a few months’ time.
In the meantime, the team are now preparing for the South-by-Southwest (SXSW) Interaction conference where Jon Rogers is chairing a panel entitled ‘Can printed electronics save the music industry?’
